First Nation Waste Management Initiative

CLIENT: K’ómoks First Nation
DATE: Dec 2022 – March 2023

Project Overview

The K’ómoks Guardian Watchmen work to protect and preserve the environment within their traditional territory. They are environmental stewards who protect the natural habitat and remove harmful items from the natural environment.

Together, the K’ómoks Guardians and Shift Environmental Technologies worked to remove solid waste from their reserve in Comox, BC. Fishing gear, derelict vehicles, metal scraps, and engines were removed to restore the land back to its natural state.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Secured $140K in funding
• Delivered an advanced training program for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS)
• Facilitated an advanced first aid training program
• Removed over 14,000 lbs of solid waste

At every stage, the planning process and the information included in this project were examined to protect the interests of the T’Sou-ke Nation, namely, their desire to repatriate the Chee-a-nun lands, diversify the T’Sou-ke Nation economy, and be a regional and national leader in oceans protection, research, and conservation.
